At 3am on 20 January 2023, the new M4 and M8 motorway link opened.

Value at $3.2b, the 7.5km mega tunnels provide a critical new link between the M4 at Haberfield and the M8 at St Peters.

This is the third stage of the $16.8b WestConnex project being delivered in a partnership between the NSW and Commonwealth governments.

The final stage of the WestConnex will be complete in late 2023 when the Rozelle Interchange opens.

Traffic engineers allege that the new link will save motorists up to 40 minutes on their journey between Western Sydney and Sydney Airport, bypassing 52 sets of traffic lights by travelling through 22km of tunnels deep under the city.

The project will also include future links to the Western Harbour Tunnel, Sydney Gateway and the M6, to better connect communities across the city and improve freight routines.
