Last week, Sydney’s first ever surf park named URBNSURF opened in Sydney Olympic Park. Spanning 3.6 hectares, budding and experienced surfers will be able to hang ten on authentic waves produced by the latest Wavegarden Cove technology.
With the construction starting almost 5 years ago, the lagoon will be of similar size to the Sydney Cricket Ground. The new wave park will feature a surf academy, a leisure swimming pool, a skate pad, a health and wellness centre and various hospitality offering.
Attendees will be able to catch some serious swells, which will centre around a diamond-shaped lagoon churning out up to 1,000 perfectly surfable waves of up to two metres in height every hour. The park will also offer those unfamiliar to surfing a door through which to experience and learn the sport.
URBNSURF’s first visitors on opening day
URBNSURF will be more than just a surf park – it will be a lifestyle precinct that combines surf culture with the best of the city: great food and drink, venues that feel like your local and events, both large and small. It is also a big win for Sydney Olympic Park’s tourist market, which can, at times, struggle to attract visitors outside of sporting events like NRL or AFL games, or even major singing concerts.
In addition to an array of recreational offerings, the premier hospitality group, Applejack Hospitality, has opened a second iteration of their award-winning restaurant, Rafi, (but with a coastal twist), as well as an all-day waterfront eatery called Sandy’s.
