Following the former NSW Liberal Government’s $40 million investment for new facilities, Taronga Conservation Society Australia has received the greenlight from the State’s planning department to construct a Wildlife Hospital on-site at Taronga Zoo.

Set to replace the Serpentaria exhibit located in the northwest area of the zoo, the new two storey hospital will include the following components:

  • research laboratories, including necropsy and pathology labs,
  • quarantine facilities,
  • education and meeting space facilities, and
  • an upper-level break-out space and terrace for staff.

The upgraded quarantine facilities will assist in the management of Taronga Zoo’s animals and support the conservation partnerships and animal management with other zoos. It will strengthen Taronga’s educational facilities by offering learning and training spaces that will enable training specific to veterinary treatment and wildlife care.

Strategically, the hospital will be located in the heart of the zoo to become part of every zoo guest’s experience.

Map of current and future projects at Taronga Zoo

Taronga Zoo is located at Bradleys Head Road in Mosman. It has evolved substantially over time from a zoo that simply provides the traditional visitor experience of viewing animals in exhibits, to a zoo that focuses on wildlife conservation, animal welfare and offers a range of visitor learning experiences.

Taronga Zoo is one of Australia’s most popular attraction and together with the Taronga Western Plains Zoo, hosts more than 1.5 million visitors annually and contributes an estimated $249 million per annum to the NSW economy. It is the leading provider of veterinary services in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in NSW.

In November 2020, the then NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet and Minister for Environment Matt Kean announced that the Taronga Conservation Society Australia will receive $40 million from the NSW Government as part of the budget to help build 2 x brand-new wildlife hospitals – one at Taronga Zoo in Sydney and the other at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.
