The revitalisation of Strathfield Town Centre has been on the cards for many years.

More recently, council has committed to pursuing a new vision for the future of the town centre, with master planning already underway.

Leveraging the existing strong features of the town centre, Council aims to provide new opportunities for community, business and cultural activities. To start this process, Council has articulated some high-level objectives for the master plan, including:

  • Set direction and create confidence associated with the future of Strathfield Town Centre
  • Support clear and transparent decision making and policy
  • Provide an evidence base to support any future amendments to the Strathfield LEP or DCP
  • Identify and prioritise public realm and placemaking opportunities

The core study area relates to those areas of the town centre, including Strathfield Square and Strathfield Plaza, which land use zoning is either mixed use or commercial core. The study area also includes the railway station and adjacent business areas to the east which are in the Burwood LGA.

The project timeline has been developed and it is expected to take 18 months to complete, commencing in the first quarter of 2024.

Strathfield Town Centre Study Area

Strathfield Town Centre is the major transport and retail centre of the Strathfield district. In the late 19th century, Strathfield Town Centre featured a small rail station, a few shops and large Victorian mansions. However, in the 1920s, the train station was extensively expanded and Strathfield became one of NSW’s major city and country stations. Homes made way for rail expansion and development of a shopping precinct. Council acquired land surplus to the railway and create Strathfield Square (i.e. park and open space) in the 1920s. The Square was extensively redesigned in the 1980s.

Strathfield Town Centre is located beside the railway, which is one of the most interconnected stations in all of Sydney, as well as being a major bus terminal.
