Cumberland Council calls for a metro station at Silverwater in anticipation of 64,000 extra residents in Cumberland LGA by 2036.

Despite Silverwater falling within Parramatta LGA, Cumberland Council has made submissions to the Sydney Metro Independent Review as it attempts to find a solution to cope with a predicted 250,000 extra trips within the Cumberland transport network.

An unusual 7km metro gap exists between Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park. A metro station at Silverwater could solve a number of problems, including transport strain at Lidcombe Station. A metro station at Sydney Olympic Park without one at Silverwater will do little to relieve overcrowding on the Sydney Trains network between Parramatta and Strathfield. It is unrealistic to expect commuters from Lidcombe and surrounding areas to interchange for the T7 Olympic Park sprint train to connect Metro West to the Sydney CBD.

Given most of the forecasted urban growth will be located between Parramatta and Sydney Olympic Park, it is important that additional metro stations are constructed to service these growing residential and employment precincts. In addition, given the tunnels for Sydney Metro West run underneath Silverwater and Camellia, this makes both locations ideal for metro stations.

Proposed Silverwater Metro Station

Cumberland Council requires a future Silverwater metro station to provide direct links to the Cumberland area, as well as a commuter carpark, buses and pedestrian and cycling paths to be delivered. Council is only supportive of the metro if it does not significantly delay the opening of the metro between Westmead and the City.

NSW Government is undertaking a review of the Sydney Metro project and the next phase of the review is due in Q4 2023 and will feature an analysis of the existing Sydney Metro West scope, including consideration of station locations.

Sydney Metro considered a metro station at Rydalmere but the former Liberal government shut this idea down because it will already benefit from a light rail stop and its location on the north side of Parramatta River would have a massive bend.
