In response to the growing demands of the Illawarra Shoalhaven region, the NSW Government has committed over $700 million to deliver state-of-the-art health facilities through the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.
Among these new developments is the new Shellharbour Hospital, which will be built on a greenfield site on Dunmore Road in Shellharbour. The planning department approved the new hospital project on 12 August 2024.
With the Health Administration Corporation having acquired a 10.56-hectare parcel at 86 Dunmore Road, the new hospital will provide a contemporary and much-needed boost to health services in the rapidly expanding Illawarra and Shellharbour areas.

The proposed facility will have a floor area of 39,452 sqm and it will operate in conjunction with other hospitals in the region. As Shellharbour experiences the fastest growth rate within the Illawarra region, the new hospital is designed to alleviate pressures on surrounding health systems and introduce advanced models of care to the community.
One of the primary motivations for the new hospital is to address the increasing demand at Wollongong Hospital. The current demand is creating unsustainable service delivery conditions, especially as the region’s population continues to rise.
