Honeysuckle City Campus is located on a series of lots situated between Honeysuckle Drive and Civic Lane, all of which the University will acquire from the Hunter Development Corporation.
The development of the city campus is part of the University’s New Futures Strategic Plan 2016 – 2025, which promotes the long-term vision of delivering new modes of education focussed around a compact campus setting in a central location.
Concept SSD-9262 saw the Minister for Planning in 2020 grant approval for the establishment of building envelopes, gross floor area and the preferred land use to facilitate the redevelopment of the University’s at-grade carpark and former heavy rail line. The concept approval comprises 7 x building envelopes with building heights ranging from 5 – 9 storeys, as well as a maximum gross floor area of 65,000 square metres for the purposes of education facilities, student accommodation and retail space.
A State significant development application will soon be lodged for a 9 x storey student accommodation building, comprising over 11,000 square metres of gross floor area. This building will be located in the southwestern corner of the Honeysuckle City Campus at 20 Civic Lane.
Building envelope location and layout
Under the Newcastle LEP, the University’s at-grade carpark and former heavy rail line is situated within a general heritage conservation area, however it does not contain any local or State listed heritage items. Despite this, the site contains remnants of a locomotive turntable that is considered to be of archaeological significance.
The site forms part of the Honeysuckle Precinct, which is located within the broader Honeysuckle Urban Renewal Project. This project commenced over 20 years ago to remediate and redevelop 50 hectares of surplus government land stretching from Newcastle CBD to Wickham and Carrington. Hunter Development Corporation has overseen a number of major projects in close proximity to the site.
The redevelopment of the University’s carpark is the next step in achieving this vision and will build on the University’s historic presence – i.e. the University House, Northumberland House and Conservation of Music – and the more recent development of NeW Space in the CBD.
