Healthcare juggernaut Ramsay Health Care is proposing an $80 million extension to Lake Macquarie Private Hospital.
Located at 3 Sydney Street, 2 and 4 Casey Street and 36 and 38 Pacific Highway in Gateshead, the development site is north of the existing private hospital, which currently comprises low density residential development. The proposal includes the erection of a 10 x storey tower, comprising:
This extension follows Ramsay’s planning proposal, which saw the height control of the development site increase from 10 metres to 37 metres. This marked the first step towards creating a next-generation health precinct for the booming Hunter Region.
The hospital’s main entrance is proposed to move from Sydney Street at the southern end to Casey Street at its northern end.

The site is regular in shape and has a total land area of over 14,000 square metres. It presently contains the existing Lake Macquarie Private Hospital, which is operated by Ramsay Health Care.
The hospital adjoins low density residential development to the north, east and west, as well as shop top housing and specialised medical consulting suites to the south.
The site is 15km southwest of Newcastle CBD and it affords road linkages to Pacific Highway and Newcastle Inner City Bypass.
The new medical facility will create an expanded regionally significant health precinct for the city and alleviate the strain on the existing 187-bed facility, which runs at or near capacity most of the year. This is a cause for concern given Lake Macquarie’s expected population of over 250,000 people by 2041.
