LOGOS, in partnership with CAE Inc and Qantas, has received the nod from the NSW Department of Planning and Environment for the construction and operation of a new flight training centre at 28 – 30 Burrows Road in St Peters.

Broadly, the proposal includes a flight training centre within a 3-storey building that will comprise:

  • a flight training hall with eight bays that will house motion flight stimulators,
  • emergency procedure facilities, including integrated procedure trainers, door trainers, slide descent tower and fire trainer, and
  • ancillary spaces including classrooms, office space for flight training employees, meeting rooms, an equipment room, pilots lounge, reception area and loading docks.

Present on the 7,935 square metre site are two large industrial warehouse buildings, a non-functioning truck wash used for storage and areas of hardstand for deliveries and parking.

The training centre will provide a convenient location for Qantas to undertake aircraft training in order to comply with the Civil Aviation Services Australia regulations required for a variety of aircraft models. This includes training for Qantas’ new A350 ultra-long-range aircraft model, which will only operate from Sydney Airport.

The site and its surrounding context

Project Background

For over half a century, Qantas has trained its pilots and cabin crew primarily at the Qantas flight training facility within the Jetbase at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. Until relatively recently, this facility trained over 6,500 crew per year and was a key operational anchor for the airline.

In April 2022, Qantas was required to vacate the centre to enable its demolition and construction of the Sydney Gateway Project – a project to improve connections to Sydney Airport and Port Botany by increasing the capacity of the surrounding road and rail network and providing an alternative route to the domestic and international airport terminals.

A new flight training centre at 297 King Street in Mascot was approved in November 2019 but due to the economic impacts of COVID-19, it was unaffordable to proceed with the development and so it was abandoned accordingly.

Qantas identified an opportunity to partner with LOGOS and CAE Inc to development a new training centre. With the site currently owned by LOGOS, it will develop the facility for CAE Inc to operate. CAE Inc – a global provider of flight stimulator equipment and training centre operations – will lease the premises on a 20-year term and Qantas will be the core customer and end user of the centre.

A project of this nature demonstrates LOGOS’ industry-leading expertise in the design and construction of specialised, purpose-built facilities beyond the logistics sector.
