NSW government has unveiled an ambitious $125 million plan to significantly expand the educational facilities in Melrose Park. This investment will not only increase the capacity of Melrose Park Public School (existing school) but also introduces a new high school to cater to the burgeoning local population.
Melrose Park is experiencing a notable increase in population, driven in part by extensive new housing developments. Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2, with a stop at Waratah Street, just a short walk from the new schools, is expected to further boost the local population. By 2026, the population in Melrose Park is projected to grow by over 30%.
Under the plans, Melrose Park Public School will expand to accommodate 700 students by the start of the 2027 school year. This expansion will alleviate current overcrowding issues, as the school has built three demountable classrooms to manage the overflow.
Melrose Park High School Concept Plan
In addition to expanding the primary school, the education department will also build a new high school on adjacent land. This new facility will have capacity for 700 students as well, helping to ease the strain one existing high schools in the area, including Marsden High School, Riverside Girls High School and Cumberland High School.
The education department acquired the land in 2019, following an announcement by former Liberal MP for Ryde, Victor Dominello. This was a crucial acquisition to ensure the educational infrastructure keeps pace with the rapid growth of the area.
