The NSW Department of Education’s circa 1-hectare landholding at 2 Thistle Street in Ryde was officially rezoned on 19 July 2024.
With Mecone acting on behalf of the department, the proposal sought to rezone the former Meadowbank Public School from SP2 Infrastructure (Educational Establishment) to RE1 Public Recreation, as well as include an additional permitted use for a childcare centre to recognise the existing use.
The site is the location of the former Meadowbank Public School that has been relocated to a new campus at 6 Rhodes Street in the Meadowbank Education and Employment Precinct. The school’s relocation presented an opportunity for the site to be converted to open space, which will include demolition of the existing school buildings.
Concept Park Plan
The existing school hall will be retained and repurposed for use as a community facility, which is permissible under the RE1 zone. The World War 1 Remembrance Garden located on the western boundary will also be retained. The northeast corner contains an existing childcare centre and that will be retained.
The new public park will complement thousands of surrounding homes, including single to two-storey dwellings, as well as mixed-use developments to the south.
