Frasers is seeking the NSW Department of Planning and Environment’s consent for a data centre that will play a vital role in providing an advanced facility to support the growth and development of IT infrastructure in Sydney.

Specifically, consent is sought for:

  • construction and operation of a 24/7 data centre, comprising 2 x 2-storey buildings with over 60,000 square metres of gross floor area,
  • utility and backup provisions including 1 x electrical substations, 63 x diesel fuel storage tanks and 62 x emergency backup generators, and
  • over 6250 square metres of ancillary office space.

Estimated to consume and produce 190 megawatts, the data centre’s state-of-the-art design, equipment and technologies will provide industry-leading energy efficient performance solutions. The inherent building fabric performance will ensure ecological sustainability can be achieved at the highest level.

The 14.43-hectare site sits within the Mamre Road Precinct, which aims to create employment in the form of major warehousing, distribution, freight transport, industrial and manufacturing facilities. In December 2020, the Minister for Planning signed off on 8 warehouses comprising over 162,000 square metres of floor space.

Global mobile data traffic increased by 49% during 2019 compared to an 18% increase in 2018. This surge in demand for data storage was initially due to increased levels of remote working during in COVID-19 pandemic.

This has generated significant requirements for additional data centre capacity in the long-term. This rapid global increase is projected to continue to 31% a year to 2025. Demand in Sydney has increased by 76% (2018-19) compared to only 34% in Tokyo, 27% in Hong Kong and 14% in Singapore.

Most demand for data storage in Sydney is from the government with demand also increasing from internet and technology, healthcare, education, and financial service providers
