Sydney CBD’s light rail network could extend south along Broadway under ambitious plans by the City of Sydney to turn the traffic-choked road into a ‘green gateway’ lined with trees and bike paths.
Released as part of Council’s access strategy, it wants to work closely with the NSW Government to transform a 700-metre stretch between Central Station and University of Sydney campus to complement the development of Tech Central from Haymarket to South Eveleigh.
The success and popularity of the light rail along George Street has turned a once clogged street with trucks and buses into a destination in its own right. City of Sydney’s vision is to replicate the same with Broadway, which is 9 lanes wide in some sections.
City of Sydney’s plan to extend the light rail network down Broadway would connect Central Station with retail, education and medical hubs
If these plans proceed, Broadway would become a welcoming space with large trees shading wide footpaths and bidirectional cycleway, as well as a light rail connection running down the middle of the road.
The project will be staged and initially extend between Pitt Street and Central Station and Derwent Street in Glebe. It would retain sufficient capacity for vehicles to access the area around it. Bus travel times are too unreliable and footpaths are too narrow for activity levels because too much space is allocated to private vehicles, most of it through traffic.
The plans are fuelled by Council’s ambition for a greener city, to get more cars off the road and encourage the use of active and public transport. This will only result in a better urban planning outcome if intensified residential density follows.
