Plans to dramatically expand the Kennards Self Storage facility in Greystanes have been halted by Cumberland Council, citing concerns over visual impact and non-compliance with planning controls.
Located at 411 Great Western Highway, the $15 million proposal aimed to double the site’s capacity, increasing storage units from 725 to 1,500 and the facility size from 9,063 sqm to 20,068 sqm.
The redevelopment would have introduced a five-storey building reaching 19.5 metres, surpassing the allowable height limit by more than 4 metres. Another two storeys would have been added to the building at the front of the property that comprises a showroom, meeting room, company store, parcel pick-up and self-storage units.

Council deemed the proposed structure as an ‘eyesore’ that conflicted with the area’s character, particularly along the Great Western Highway, where the prominent site sits. The rejection also reinforced the refusal of 24/7 operating hours, with the facility restricted to its existing approval trading period of 7am to 6pm.
Kennards Greystanes sits on 14,413 sqm of prime land within an E3 Productivity Support precinct. The area is bounded by major transport corridors, including the M4 Motorway and Great Western Highway, and is adjacent to recreation zones to the north (i.e. Wenty Leagues Club).
Existing on the site are five rectangular buildings containing 725 storage units.
