Inner West Council is undertaking initial consultation on a number of proposed heritage changes.
A review carried out by heritage specialists – GML Heritage – recommended specific changes to heritage conservation areas, including:
The report will inform a planning proposal to amend the heritage schedule under the Inner West LEP.

Based on GML Heritage’s findings, it is recommended that Schedule 5 of the Inner West LEP be amended to list the following 9 x new conservation areas:
Council is also considering extending the boundaries of the following 3 x existing heritage conservation areas:
40 William Street in Ashfield, 24A Railway Road in Sydenham and 44 Wellesley Street in Summer Hill will be removed as local heritage items.
Relatively recently, the NSW Productivity Commissioner released a paper indicating that the greatest downward effect on house prices could be achieved with a planning process that increases housing density in areas of highest demand, particularly close to the CBD.
The Inner West is conveniently located for much higher residential density. The Inner West Council’s vision to expand the boundaries of various heritage conservation areas will add a further layer of difficulty for the NSW Government when implementing the Productivity Commissioner’s recommendations.
