Iberdrola Australia is seeking to support Australia’s renewable energy transition by providing firmed green energy to a large range of commercial and industrial customers in Australia.

Consent has been sought to build and operate a battery energy storage system at 6 Herbert Place in Smithfield – the Smithfield Energy Facility – of up to 72 megawatts and up to 260 megawatt hours of battery storage capacity.

The project requires an area of up to 2700 square metres and will connect into the switchgear building on the site. It involves:

  • a battery energy storage system, including battery enclosures, inverters, transformers and a control building,
  • a high voltage transmission line connection between the storage system and the existing switchgear building, and
  • switchgear building upgrades to facilitate connection of the storage system.

Battery energy storage systems provide short duration storage, frequency control ancillary services (to provide a fast injection of energy to manage supply and demand) and help firm variable renewable energy generation.

Located within an existing industrial area part of the Smithfield Recycling and Manufacturing Precinct, the site is owned by Smithfield Power Generation on land leased from Visy.

The Smithfield Energy Facility has been in operation since 1996, originally designed and operated as a combined cycle gas turbine power plant, supplying both electricity to the NSW electricity grid and heat in the form of steam to the adjacent Visy facility.

NSW is undergoing an energy sector transformation, which is changing the way in which energy is generated and used throughout the State. The need to increase the generation of renewable energy has never been so great as many of the State’s largest coal-fired power stations look to hang up the boots
