Georges River Council is leading a planning proposal to enable the future development of a civic, cultural, community and residential destination within the Hurstville City Centre.

Bounded by Queens Road, Dora Street, MacMahon Street and Park Road, the proposal seeks to rezone the site to entirely B4 Mixed-Use and increase the heights on some of the allotments to 60 metres.

Sitting on over 12,500sqm, the new civic centre will include a range of new public benefits, including public plazas, a library, gallery, auditorium and theatre space and a new council chambers.

Most of the site is considered ‘operational’ land under the Local Government Act, with the exception of the land at the corner of Dora Street and Queens Road, which is classified as ‘community’ land.

Council compulsorily acquired the local Baptist church in March 2017, which forms part of the proposal.

Existing on the site at the moment are council offices, an entertainment centre, youth centre, seniors housing and a museum and gallery.

Forest Road is the traditional shopping street lined with 2 – 3 storey buildings and provides a diverse retail and food offering with shops on the street level.

Hurstville City Centre continues to undergo significant urban renewal that has led to its transformation as a vibrant strategic metropolitan centre.

The rapid transformation is particularly visible in areas close to the train station and shopping strip along Forest Road.
