NSW Department of Planning and Environment has signed off on a concept for the redevelopment of Ryde Hospital.
Broadly, the proposal will deliver a state-of-the-art hospital facility that will create greater efficiencies, improve operations and respond to existing capacity constraints and expected population growth in the Northern Sydney Local Health District.
Concept approval granted on 30 June 2023 permits 55,000 square metres of gross floor area, comprising:
(1) a clinical services building envelope located in the centre of the site, standing 39.5 metres high, and
(2) a multi-deck carpark envelope located in the east of the site, standing 24.9 metres high with capacity for about 350 vehicles.

The primary allotment comprising the existing hospital is 1 Denistone Road in Denistone.
The hospital sits on about 76,000 square metres of land and is located in a low-density residential area at the interface between the suburbs of Denistone and Eastwood. It comprises of 194 beds with 1, 2 and 3-storey buildings connected by covered or enclosed walkways.
Originally, the site was used as a convalescent hospital for men via the 1934 opening of the Ryde District Soldier’s Memorial Hospital. Three of the hospital’s buildings are of heritage significance with other buildings being added to the heritage register over time. Central to the design of the new hospital is the retention and preservation of these on-site heritage buildings, particularly Denistone House and The Stables.
The project is part of the NSW Government’s $11.9 billion investment in health infrastructure to 2025-2026.
