Global delivery giant Amazon has pledged to invest almost $500 million into Western Sydney and generate more than 1,000 jobs with the development of two new fulfillment centres.

With the NSW Premier Chris Minns officially launching the construction of the site at Oakdale East Industrial Estate in Horsley Park on 9 April 2024, Premier Minns said the fulfillment centres provide a much-needed capital investment from Amazon. He continued on by saying that this “corner of Sydney will be one of the most exciting additions to job creation and economic development in the entire country”.

The first purpose-built facility is tipped to be 80,000 sqm, which is 4.5 times the size of the Opera House, with capacity to hold up to 1.6 million items. With the opening expected in early 2026, the centre will hold items sold on amazon.com, including garden equipment, furniture and flat screen TVs. Construction of this site has commenced and will generate an additional 3,000 jobs during construction and fit-out. The second 33,400 sqm facility is equivalent to 4.5 rugby league fields and is set to open later this year. It will be a fit-out of an existing building and hold up to 600,000 items.

The new fulfillment centres will offer a range of jobs to the community, including opportunities in IT, HR and technology, alongside roles to pick, pack and ship items to customers.

Since opening its first Sydney fulfillment centre in Moorebank in 2018, Amazon has invested more than $1.5 billion into Western Sydney. The global retail giant also opened a robotics fulfillment centre in Kemps Creek in 2022 and a logistic site in Regents Park, which generated more than 3,000 jobs for the area.

Earlier in the year, Amazon pulled out of launching a major new stock warehouse on the outskirts of Western Sydney Airport, with fears more companies would take their businesses elsewhere amid the embarrassing reams of red tape hobbling construction.

Oakdale East Industrial Estate is a joint venture between industrial giant Goodman and Brickworks. The industrial joint venture between the groups has grown significant during the past decade across Australia and North America.
