Crystalbrook Collection – a luxury hotel owner and operator with a growing presence in Australia – is planning to rebrand, reposition and refurbish 55 George Street in The Rocks.

Crystalbrook acquired the leasehold interest in the Rydges Hotel site from Place Management NSW and is collaborating closely with the State’s Planning Department and City of Sydney.

Specifically, the proposal involves:

  • refurbishment of the existing Rydges Hotel to deliver a state-of-the-art hotel that responds to the market and Place Management’s strategy to elevate the position of The Rocks,
  • creation of new food and beverage tenancies to enhance the activation and vibrancy of the precinct along Playfair and George streets, as well as Mill Lane,
  • improved permeability through the site, and
  • creation of a new publicly accessible roof-top space on the upper floor of the building with uninterrupted views to Sydney Harbour, the CBD and the surrounds.

Given the existing building fails to complement the unique character of The Rocks precinct, Crystalbrook will take advantage of this rare opportunity to reimagine the property and deliver a high-quality hotel project that complements local character and enhances local resident and visitor experiences.

55 George Street sits on 1854 square metres of land. The building is 8-storeys high and is made up of two components:

(1) the historic Harrington’s Building constructed in 1924, and

(2) the 1980s addition for the Old Sydney Park Hotel (rebranded to Rydges in 2021), comprising 176 guest rooms.

The NSW Government acquired the vast majority of the land in The Rocks in 1900 and a number of redevelopment plans were formulated in the years after WW2.

In terms of next steps, the proposal will undergo a design review process with the State Design Review Panel. EMBECE have been engaged as the lead architect.
