Griffin Theatre Company has been awarded the tick of approval for expansion of its entertainment facility at 10 Nimrod Street in Darlinghurst.

The intent of the amendment is to support redevelopment and expansion of the existing theatre at no. 10, which currently operates under existing use rights. Redevelopment will be achieved through a site specific LEP permissibility clause, which is needed to the theatre’s expansion onto the adjoining land at 12 Nimrod Street.

Key objectives of the proposal include:

  •  the continued use of 10 Nimrod Street as a theatre (i.e. type of entertainment facility),
  • enable the theatre to be lawfully expanded to 12 Nimrod Street,
  • redevelopment of the land to provide a contemporary cultural facility which increases the capacity by 50 seats, and
  • provide a rehearsal space for the Griffin Theatre company

Stables Theatre, Darlinghurst

The new building will add theatre spaces and upgrades that are not possible with the spatial constraints of the existing building, such as rehearsal space, accessible lift and increased seating capacity for a total of 140 people.

Griffin is located in the historic SBW Stables Theatre, nestled in the heart of Kings Cross. It is the only theatre company in Australia entirely devoted to new Australian plays.

Griffin’s long-term sustainability, the recent funding security provided by being part of the National Performing Arts Partnership Framework and the company’s strong history of philanthropic support means it is in a strong position to contribute to the culture and arts industry within Darlinghurst.

A contemporary cultural facility in the locality that is commensurate with modern day performance spaces will form part of the social and urban fabric of Darlinghurst.
