Parra Light Rail Stage 2 includes the construction of 10km of light rail infrastructure and the operation of about 13km of light rail alignment. This includes new light rail tracks with 14 stops, 2 bridges over the Parramatta River, a bridge over Silverwater Road and integration with other forms of public transport. It also encompasses about 8.5km of new active transport links and improvements to public spaces.

Set to change the landscape of those suburbs surrounding Parramatta, the project is designed to extend the existing light rail network from Parramatta CBD to several key areas including Camellia, Rydalmere, Ermington, Melrose Park, Wentworth Point, Sydney Olympic Park and the Carter Street precinct in Lidcombe. This extension aims to meet the demands of population and employment growth in Sydney’s Central River City and the Greater Parramatta and Olympic Peninsula areas, aligning with the NSW Government’s vision for a more connected and accessible Greater Sydney.

Stage 2 will no doubt add significant benefit to the community by improving connectivity, enhancing transport choice and accessibility, reducing reliance on cars and supporting growth. Frequent and reliable light rail services will be delivered, together with integration with other transport modes and foster urban renewal and placemaking in areas north of Parramatta River.

Parramatta Light Rail network

With planned population and employment growth in the area, there’s urgent need for an effective transport network to support this development. More than 40% of residents in the Greater Parramatta and Olympic Peninsula and 30% of employees are expected to live and work along the project corridor by 2041, necessitating improved public transport options to meet these demands.

The need for the projects stems from the Greater Parramatta and Olympic Peninsula areas being identified as a priority growth area to support the development of Greater Parramatta. The project has evolved through stages of identifying and refining strategic transport modes, network alternatives and corridor options, considering community and stakeholder feedback.

With the preferred route developed in 2019, the light rail will operate as a turn-up-and-go service from 5am to 1am, seven days a week. The first passenger services are anticipated to commence from 2030/2031 following the planned commencement of construction in 2025.
